Short description
The Dutchman Wout Weghorst had to work hard to earn his place in professional football. At the age of 20, he made the leap from amateur football to the second division in the Netherlands and played for FC Emmen and Heracles Almelo before ultimately transferring to AZ Alkmaar, where he showed he could play at a higher level. In 2018 Weghorst joined VfL Wolfsburg, where the 1.97-metre-tall striker scored a Bundesliga goal every two games on average. The 22-time international fulfilled his dream of playing in the Premier League in 2022 and made the move to Burnley. The striker kept his own top-tier status following the club’s relegation by moving to Istanbul outfit Besiktas for half a year and then spending the second half-season at Manchester United. Weghorst was part of the Netherlands squad for the 2021 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring two goals in the quarter-final against Argentina and then converting his spot-kick in the shootout. Weghorst joined TSG Hoffenheim on loan in the summer of 2023.
