Richards joins TSG on loan from Bayern

On the final day of the winter transfer window, Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim have reached an agreement to sign a player to bolster their depleted defensive ranks. The 21-year-old central defender Christopher Jeffrey Richards will join the Kraichgau club on loan from German record champions FC Bayern Munich until the end of the current campaign.

"Chris is a tough-tackling and very quick defensive player who has already got minutes under his belt despite the high degree of competition within the Bayern squad," said director of football Alexander Rosen of the 1.88m-tall American. In light of the injuries to Benni Hübner (ankle injury), Ermin Bicakcic (torn cruciate ligament) and Kevin Akpoguma (thigh injury), Rosen believes that the loan signing of Richards until the end of the season offers "an important and valuable option in the central defensive position".

The United States international, who was born in Birmingham (Alabama), left Major League Soccer club FC Dallas to join the Bayern Munich youth setup in the summer of 2018 and spent last season in the Bayern U23 squad, which won the third division title under the leadership of now TSG boss Sebastian Hoeness. Richards has already made eight appearances in the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFL Super Cup for Hansi Flick's senior side.
