Grillitsch: "There's huge disappointment"

Here's what the players and coach had to say after the 3-1 defeat to Union Berlin.

Florian Grillitsch: "There's huge disappointment. We didn't manage to take the lead in the first half. In the second half, we didn't start well. Union then played the ball out well and won the penalty. For me it wasn't a red card. Nonetheless, we showed a super mentality with 10 men and moved the ball well. It got more difficult towards the end with our energy levels. We're all sad because we actually played well, but didn't manage to get the goals."

Ryan Sessegnon: "We had several good chances to take the lead. We had good control over the game but didn't make such a good start after the break. The red card was unfortunate; it was difficult once we'd gone behind. But we showed strong mentality to come back and then it's always a question of whether you try to keep applying pressure. With hindsight, we would've obviously been cleverer; we would've probably tried to go for the draw."

Munas Dabbur: "Unfortunately, we couldn't get the reward for our strong fightback after the red card. We showed a very good mentality at that point but unfortunately we couldn't get even the one point. We're obviously all disappointed. We wanted to make it 2-1 but perhaps we wanted to win too much. We need to learn from this."

Sebastian Hoeness: "We made an especially good start to the first period and created some chances for ourselves, but Union had a few good opportunities too. It would've been important for us to take the lead at that point. But we didn't restart well after the break. You could sense we were missing some energy; we couldn't make much of an impact going forward any more. The red card obviously decisively impacts the game. Nonetheless, the team showed a strong reaction and fought back well. You could see that we were playing with 10 men. The equaliser was deserved; that makes it all the more bitter that we fell behind once again."

Urs Fischer (Union Berlin coach): "Compliment to the lads. We really gave it everything for the 90 minutes today. I'm delighted that the team got their reward for a great performance. Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the first period. The 0-0 scoreline helped us for the second half. We did superbly well in the lead-up to the penalty. After that, we were no longer so well organised and Hoffenheim did very well. It's brilliant that we were able to go up a gear again at the end."
