Hübner: "I'm happy to take on responsibility"

Centre-back Benjamin Hübner has been a TSG Hoffenheim player for four years and even wore the captain's armband in the second half of last season. The 31-year-old sat down for a chat with media representatives during the summer training camp in Rottach-Egern to speak about the first few training sessions, Sebastian Hoeness and the competition for places in defensive positions.

Benjamin, the first training sessions at Lake Tegernsee are over. What's your first impression?

"I'm hugely looking forward to the next few days. We have optimal conditions here. It's finally starting up again, all the lads are raring to go. It's obviously especially good fun in such a setting."

What's your first impression of head coach Sebastian Hoeness?

"He's an easy-going guy with clear ideas when it comes to football. We now need to get to know him. And he needs to get to know us as a team. The training camp is the perfect place for that to happen."

You wore the captain's armband for TSG in the second half of last season. Can you envisage doing so again this season?

"I'm very relaxed about this. There's no urgent need to settle the matter. I'm happy to take on responsibility and will do so regardless of whether I am captain or not."

There's tough competition for places in the centre of defence. How do you assess the situation?

"It's a new season with a new coach. Everyone has the opportunity to prove themselves. And so everyone is getting stuck in. We know that it's a good thing to have competition for places. Everyone is going for it and wants to state his case to the coach."

What do you make of the current make-up of the team?

"Almost all the players are fit. You saw at the end of last season how strong our squad can be if Munas Dabbur and Andrej Kramarić are fit and available to play. I think that we're currently very well positioned to challenge in three competitions in the coming season."
