Sessegnon: "We want to be successful"

Ryan Sessegnon moved to TSG Hoffenheim on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of October. On Saturday, he scored his first goal for the club in the 3-3 draw with Stuttgart. Prior to the UEFA Europa League game against Slovan Liberec (Thursday at 18:55 CET), the 20-year-old Englishman spoke to tsg-hoffenheim.de about the clash with the Czechs, the aims for the Europa League and his first goal.

You could wrap up your place in the Europa League knockout stages on Thursday. How confident are you that you'll manage that against Slovan Liberec?

"It's a very important match for us. We want to qualify for the next round and we're highly motivated. In addition, a victory could boost our self-belief for the league."

Slovan were missing several players due to coronavirus infections in the reverse fixture. Are you now prepared to face a different team?

"Ultimately, it shouldn't play a role for us which opponent takes to the field. That said, we're under the assumption it's going to be a difficult game. But we're concentrating on ourselves and we want to win the match."

What are your aims in the competition?

"First of all, to navigate the group stages – but we obviously want to achieve more than simply reaching the next round. We'll take it a game at a time and see how far we get in the Europa League. We have big ambitions."

Tottenham Hotspur – your parent club – could be one of TSG's opponents further down the line in this Europa League campaign...

"That would obviously be a special match for me. And it would be a big game for TSG as well, given that in the group stages we haven't been drawn against a really big-name opponent."

There have also been several corona infections at TSG lately. That meant you had to withdraw from international duty. How were the past few days for you?

"The communication between TSG and the English FA was very good. We reached the agreement that the best option would be for me to withdraw and train at home. Fortunately, almost all of the players are now healthy and training with the team again."

Whilst you've made a perfect start to the Europa League with three wins, you're still waiting for your first victory in the Bundesliga. How do you explain the difference?

"They are two different situations. It's not always possible to explain it. We were on the verge of winning against Stuttgart. That was very frustrating, but we won't give up and we'll get back to winning ways again."

There was still a notable success against VfB Stuttgart, however: you scored your first goal in the Bundesliga.

"It felt super and I'm happy that I was able to help the team, but I would of course have preferred the victory. I want to develop here and I have big ambitions with TSG."
