TSG beaten in first leg of Champions League play-off

TSG’s first game on a European stage ended in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the first leg of this Champions League playoff, and James Milner doubled the lead for Jürgen Klopp’s men in the second half. In stoppage time, Mark Uth managed to pull a goal back, giving TSG a fighting chance going into the second leg in Liverpool.

Tactics and line-up

Julian Nagelsmann sent the following 11 players out onto the pitch to face Liverpool: Oliver Baumann, Pavel Kaderabek, Ermin Bicakcic, Lukas Rupp, Kerem Demirbay, Sandro Wagner, Steven Zuber, Benjamin Hübner, Kevin Vogt, Andrej Kramaric and Serge Gnabry.

The players lined up in a familiar 3-5-2 formation: Vogt as the centre back with Bicakcic and Hübner supporting him from either side in the back three. Steven Zuber and Pavel Kaderabek took their place on either wing, with Demirbay, Rupp and Kramaric in the so-called free positions in the centre of midfield. For the most part, Demirbay played just behind the other two. Up front, Serge Gnabry and Sandro Wagner acted as the danger men.

Nagelsmann made his first two changes soon after the restart: in the 52nd minute, he brought on Havard Nordveit for Bicakcic, and just a minute later Rupp was replaced by a more attacking Nadiem Amiri. The third and final change was made in the 70th minute and saw Gnabry make way for Mark Uth.

Moment of the match:

Even though it wasn’t enough for a win, or even a draw, Mark Uth’s goal – TSG’s first in Europe will live long in the memory. A typical left-footed hammer, right into the history books.

Number of the game: 1

It was TSG’s first game in Europe. Mark Uth got the first European goal for the club, and TSG have a very special number 1 in Oliver Baumann. The whole team thanked the fans for their outstanding support throughout the evening. Baumann went one step further and stepped back out onto the pitch on his own, to give the Südkruve a final wave of gratitude.
