Wolfsburg match reaction

Here’s what the manager and players had to say about the 4-2 defeat to Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon.

Markus Gisdol: Obviously it was a considerably bad start – 2-0 down after seven minutes. We can’t get away with playing how we did in the opening 20 minutes. My team found their feet though, and managed to pull a goal back before the break. Then we found the equaliser right after half time. I always felt we were in the game. Then we started giving Wolfsburg too much space and they exploited it well. It was careless defending. To try and mount another comeback after going 3-2 down is incredibly difficult. The result is tough to take. We’re still feeling the effects of our poor start to the season and really need to start getting points on the board. We didn’t manage that today.

Oliver Baumann: It was already 2-0 with not ten minutes on the clock – it was far too easy for them and obviously shouldn’t be happening. We managed to get a foothold in the game though and pulled it back to 2-2. Then we made too easy for Wolfsburg in front of goal again. Obviously they have a lot of quality in their side, but a pass in behind the defence and a square ball into the middle is all it takes – then they showed how dangerous they are in front of goal and scored.

Eugen Polanski: We have to ask ourselves why we practically gave them the game after just eight minutes. That’s not what we train to do and we don’t expect it to happen. We did manage to get back in the game and equalise, but then we let it slip again. Wolfsburg weren’t outstanding today – we’re just not defending well as a team.

Sebastian Rudy: We were basically absent for the start of the match. We just didn’t turn up. Everyone could see that and against a team like Wolfsburg it can be over very quickly. Somehow we managed to make it 2-2. In the closing stages we were brave and kept pushing men forward. We just got caught a little unorganised at the back. Then there was another counterattack at the end to make it 4-2 and kill the game.
