No points against HSV - TSG lose after red card

TSG suffered a home defeat at the hands of Hamburger SV. Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored the only goal in the 88th minute in the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

Line-up and formation:

TSG started with a defensive 4-4-2 formation. The back four in front of Oliver Baumann consisted of Jeremy Toljan, Ermin Bicakcic, Niklas Süle and Tobias Strobl. The next line was made up of Jonathan Schmid, Eugen Polanski, Pirmin Schwegler and Kevin Volland, with Eduardo Vargas and Adam Szalai operating as the two strikers.

They formed a fluid attacking line, with Vargas often dropping in behind Szalai to create a versatile front three. Schwegler and Polanski were pulling the strings as defensive midfielders.

Aggressive - TSG started with a very high line. When Adler had the ball in his hands, the centre halves Süle and Bicakcic stepped up to the halfway line. This was designed to stop the guests from building any dangerous attacks from the back.

This tactical approach took a blow in the 68th minute when Ermin Bicakcic saw a second yellow and was sent for an early bath. Schwegler was subbed off in place of Fabian Schär and TSG battled to keep the point.

Moment of the match:

Happiness and despair are always so close, with a 20 second period deciding the outcome of the match. Jeremy Toljan has a fantastic solo run before shooting at Rene Adler. At the other end, Lasogga scores the only goal of the day for HSV. That’s football. The teams that are in need of a bit of luck, quite often don’t get any. Andreas Brehme would say: "If it’s not your day, then it’s not your day."

Number of the match: 47

There were a lot of fouls in the duel between TSG and HSV. TSG committed 24, and the guests 23. These numbers show that this was a hard-fought game. TSG wanted it, of that there is no question.
