Jonathan Schmid: "I want to be prolific again"

Jonathan Schmid is happily settled at TSG Hoffenheim. He has found somewhere to live and feels at home here – both in the area and at the club. The Frenchman spoke to achtzehn99.de about his and TSG’s start to the season, and the upcoming match against Darmstadt.

Hello Jonathan, the start of the season has not completely gone to plan. The match against Bayern though was positive in many ways. What have you taken from the performance?

Jonathan Schmid: Yeah that’s true. We played well as a team, were aggressive and had our chances. Unfortunately, we didn’t take all of them. But we played well against Bayern, as we did against Leverkusen the week before. We have to keep going and focus on the performances rather than the results. Next stop Darmstadt.

Will the match against Darmstadt be easier than your opening fixtures?

Schmid: No, it certainly won’t be easier. Darmstadt were promoted, they’ve enjoyed a good start to the season, and are motivated to get more points. We have to want it more than them, and then we will be able to celebrate our first points of the season. It’s important that we play the football we know we can.

It is harder to play newly-promoted teams at the beginning of the season?

Schmid: I think that’s irrelevant when you play these teams. You have to play every team at some point, twice a season. Doesn’t matter whether it’s the first, third or last match day. Bayern or Darmstadt, we have to give our all and make sure we play our football.

It has gone very well for you so far at TSG. Are you happy?

Schmid: I feel at home here and am happy that I’m able to play games. I haven’t yet played in the position that I’m used to however. At Freiburg, I was always used on the wings but at TSG I’m played in central midfield or as part of the midfield diamond. I had to adjust and familiarise myself with the new role. As a result, I haven’t been able to play to my full potential – I definitely want to be more prolific again.

You have slotted straight into the starting XI – why do you think you fit so well to TSG’s style of play?

Schmid: I like fast-paced games, and that’s how TSG like to play. I can develop here at this team and with this style of play, so I am very happy.

You said in an interview, that a 'kick up the backside' does you good…
