International round-up

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim had a total of six players in action for their national teams last weekend. Eren Derdiyok, due to join the club from Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the beginning of the new season, caused the biggest sensation, scoring a superb hat-trick against Germany in Basel. Fabian Johnson also had an excellent game as the USA thrashed Scotland 5-1 in Florida. Only Bosnia-Herzegovina midfielder Sejad Salihovic was on the end of a defeat, as his country were beaten 1-0 by the Republic of Ireland.

USA 5-1 Scotland

Daniel Williams and Johnson both helped the US to a convincing win over Craig Levein's Scotland side in Jacksonville on Sunday. Landon Donovan bagged a hat-trick of his own, but Johnson gave an electric performance until he was withdrawn on 73 minutes. It was the first of three friendly games before Jürgen Klinsmann's team begin their qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Their next game is this Thursday against the five-time World Cup winners Brazil, hosts of the showpiece event in two years' time.

Upcoming games:

Canada vs. USA (friendly, Monday June 4th)

USA vs. Antigua & Barbuda (WC qualifier, Saturday, June 9th)

Guatemala vs. USA (WC qualifier, Wednesday, June 13th)

Switzerland 5-3 Germany

Eren Derdiyok almost defeated German single-handedly as he notched three times to help Switzerland defeat three-time World Cup winners Germany 5-3 on Saturday. The Swiss next face a friendly at home to Romania in Luzern on Wednesday May 30th.

Tim Wiese was for Germany for the 5-3 defeat, but has been named in Joachim Löw's definitive squad for the UEFA European Championships in Poland and Ukraine which begin in two weeks' time. Before that, the German squad have another friendly against Israel this Thursday evening in Leipzig.

Ireland 1-0 Bosnia-Herzegovina

Sejad Salihovic was an unused substitute as Bosnia-Herzegovina were narrowly beaten by Ireland. Shane Long scored the winning goal for Giovanni Trapattoni's team. Salihovic and the rest of the squad have an opportunity to erase the defeat when they take on Mexico in Chicago on Thursday.

Ireland U21s 1-2 Denmark U21s

There was better news for Jannik Vestergaard, as Denmark's U21 team were 2-1 victory away in Dublin, with the 19-year-old defender playing for over an hour before he was substituted. On Tuesday June 5th, Denmark resume their qualifying campaign for the 2013 UEFA European Championships when they take on Macedonia in Aalborg. Trailing group leaders Serbia by three points, a win will do their chances of qualifying the world of good.

Isaac Vorsah and Stephan Schröck are both in action this Friday for Ghana and the Philippines respectively. Vorsah and his teammates face two World Cup qualifiers, first at home to Lesotho and then away to 2012 African Cup of Nations Zambia (Saturday, June 9th). Schröck will travel to Kuala Lumpur as his team takes on Malaysia, with two further home games against Indonesia (Tuesday, June 5th) and China (Tuesday, June 12th).
