U21 EUROS: Amiri & Toljan into final after shootout

Germany U21s yesterday reached the final of the European Championship in Poland after beating England 4-3 on penalties on a dramatic night in Tychy. Jeremy Toljan set up the first goal in a 2-2 draw in normal time and Nadiem Amiri converted Germany's final penalty.

Jeremy Toljan received all round praise for his performance and was particularly heralded for his first half display by ARD pundit Mehmet Scholl. The Hoffenheim right-back set up Davie Selke for the opening goal in the 35th minute. "He had a very good game. The cross for the goal was world class and he didn't let anything through at the back. Whenever the Germans attacked, he was always up with the play."

Despite a strong performance from Toljan, England struck twice after Germany took the lead. Demarai Gray converted from a corner in the 41st minute and Tammy Abraham swept in another after half-time. Toljan had a great opportunity to equalise for the German in the 57th minute, but he couldn't convert from Maximilian Arnold's cross at the back post. Substitute Felix Platte eventually brought Germany level in the 70th minute.

Amiri keeps his cool

Toljan's Hoffenheim teammate Nadiem Amiri came on in the 87th minute and made an immediate impact on the game. As the game went into extra time, Amiri almost converted from Toljan's cross, but for a crucial touch from the England goalkeeper. Amiri found himself one yard too far forward and wasn't able to adjust quickly enough after the save. Shortly afterwards TSG's number 18 headed into the England penalty box, but his cross evaded everyone and went out past the far post.

Just before the end of extra time, the Hoffenheim duo again combined, with Toljan picking out Amiri in the centre of the box with a cross, but the attacker couldn't control the ball in the 115th minute. It was the Germans' big chance to avoid the lottery of a penalty shootout. However, Amiri held his nerve to put Germany 4-3 up from the spot and England's Redmond missed to grant Germany a place in Friday's final against Spain.
