Schär secures victory for Switzerland

Switzerland won their opening game of the European Championship in France 1-0. Scorer of the winning goal was TSG centre back Fabian Schär who headed home after five minutes from a corner.

The goal scored by the former Basel defender who moved to TSG a year ago was the fastest in Switzerland’s European Championship history. The Swiss had several further chances to double their lead, but in the end they have goalkeeper Yann Sommer to thank for the win. The Gladbach number one denied the Albanians an equaliser with two spectacular saves.

After 37 minutes, Albania had to play with ten men as captain Lorik Cana was sent off for a handball offence which earnt him his second yellow card. For Switzerland, this was only the second victory in ten European Championship finals games. The other win came in 2008 as they beat Portugal 2-0, by which point in the tournament Switzerland had already been eliminated. Their next game in this year’s tournament is on Wednesday in Paris where they take on Romania - a win for Switzerland would see them secure qualification for the Round of 16 with a group game to spare.
