Johnson beats Salihovic - Vestergaard makes debut

It was with mixed feelings that a number of Hoffenheim's international representatives returned to the Kraichgau this week. While Fabian Johnson, Patrick Schorr and Jeremy Toljan were all successful, Sejad Salihovic, Tarik Elyounoussi, Niklas Süle, Kevin Akpoguma and Jannik Vestergaard all suffered defeats. The Denmark game marked centre-back Vestergaard's senior debut for his nation.

In a goal-heavy encounter in Sarajevo between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the USA, there was a head-to-head meeting between Hoffenheim's Sejad Salihovic and Fabian Johnson. The USA side ran out 4-3 winners away from home, and Johnson – who was in the starting eleven – impressed, assisting the equaliser (2-2) for Jozy Altidore.

In Sweden's game against Norway in Solna, the hosts ran out 4-2 winners against their Scandinavian neighbours. Tarik Elyounoussi was in the starting line-up, but was brought off after 72 minutes when Sweden were 3-2 ahead. The celebrated hero for the home side was Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored a hat-trick.

Casteels still waiting for chance

Jannik Vestergaard made his senior debut for Denmark. In a friendly on Wednesday evening, the TSG central defender came on in the 64th minute with Poland leading 3-2, a score that didn't change come the final whistle. “The moment I was brought on was a special one. It's something I have always dreamed of. The team made me feel very welcome and now I'm an international. That's something no one can take away from me,” said Vestergaard on Thursday morning to achtzehn99.de. Eugen Polanski, normally a regular starter in the Poland side, stayed in Hoffenheim and has recovered from a thigh strain.

TSG goalkeeper Koen Casteels didn't take to the field in Belgium's 0-0 draw with France. The 21-year-old was selected for the Belgium side for the first time by manager Marc Wilmots.

Youth internationals

Patrick Schorr and Jeremy Toljan were involved in a 3-0 win for Germany's U20 team against Luxembourg's U21s. Both Hoffenheim defenders played one half.

At the same time on Wednesday evening, Germany's U19 team had a friendly in Hungary. Niklas Süle and Kevin Akpoguma were involved. After an end-to-end game where Germany twice led, the hosts eventually triumphed 3-2.
