TSG training camp, day six – Training session followed by 3-1 win

The morning's training session had an aspect of pressure to it as Hoffenheim faced Dutch top division side SC Heerenveen in the afternoon. The main focus was the tactical setup of the team, as well as the movement off the ball. The session included work on 5 vs. 2 situations as well as set pieces. Danny Williams, Stephan Schröck, Sven Schipplock, Marvin Compper and Chris were all not at full fitness and as a result couldn't be involved in the second friendly.

The game against Heerenveen, who are managed by Dutch footballing legend Marco van Basten, saw the return of former Hoffenheim player Jukka Raitala, who was under contract at TSG up until last summer.

Second game, second win of 2013

Van Basten's team were, as expected, difficult opponents. Hoffenheim though, had the better start. In the opening minute, Eren Derdiyok fired over the bar. Soon after, the Dutch side improved and were rewarded when they opened the scoring. Having won the ball in midfield, van la Parra was put through and he made no mistake. Hoffenheim were not deterred though and created a few chances before the end of the first half. Sejad Salihovic's free kick in the 36th minute resulted in three chances for TSG as Matthieu Delpierre hit the bar, Derdiyok fired the follow-up at the goalkeeper, before Jannik Vestergaard finally turned the ball home from six yards to equalise. Only four minutes later and Takashi Usami had put TSG into the lead. Kevin Volland fired an effort goalwards after great interplay between Roberto Firmino and Derdiyok and, although his effort was saved, Usami put home the rebound.

The second half was an even affair, although TSG only had to wait six minutes to create another chance, but Derdiyok couldn't beat the Dutch goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Marecek failed to take advantage of a ball into the box as Heerenveen looked for an equaliser. Moments before the game finished, substitute Joselu scored the best goal of the game. After a poor bit of defending from Heerenveen goalkeeper Nordfeldt, the ball sprang up in the area and the Spanish striker finished spectacularly with a sideways scissor-kick to make Hoffenheim 3-1 winners.
