TSG dreaming of Europe
Not falling into the trap
In his pre-match press conference, Babbel expressed his surprise that Hoffenheim have managed just one point from seven matches against Leverkusen. And when quizzed about what could help buck this trend for TSG, his answer gave out a clear and unequivocal message that 1899 are up for the challenge: “A new manager.” In recent weeks, Leverkusen have changed their approach in games, something which Babbel attributes to the new management of Sami Hyypiä, a former teammate of Babbel's at Liverpool FC. “They don't press as much as they used to, but instead they hold their shape, wait for the opposition to make mistakes and then hit them quickly on the break. We will have to be wary that we don't fall into that trap”, explained the Hoffenheim boss.
Building pressure
There should be no shortage of motivation for 1899. They have a chance to qualify for a European competition for the first time in their history. “We have discussed it, sure. It's now our job to do everything we can to try and make that dream a reality”, revealed the manager. The draw away to SC Freiburg made absolutely sure of the club's safety from relegation, but now the aim is to build up a head of steam and make the most of the opportunity that has presented itself. Babbel refused to focus on how tight the competition is among the European spots, maintaining that his team's objective is three points no matter what. “We have to carry on how we've been performing, but also create a few more goalscoring chances. Leverkusen will be giving it their all; the Europa League is their minimum objective. We have to be completely focused on keeping them out.”
Weis returns, Firmino sidelined
In terms of personnel, Babbel will have to do without the services of influential Brazilian midfielder Roberto Firmino, who damaged ankle ligaments against Freiburg and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. But aside from him, the manager has are no fresh injury worries. Sven Schipplock is likely to keep his place in attack, with either Ryan Babel or Peniel Mlapa expected to partner him. Tobias Weis, who underlined his commitment to the club by signing a new contract this week, returns from suspension and could line up alongside Sejad Salihovic, who has also agreed a new deal.
