2-1 friendly win over Ingolstadt
In charge of the team for yesterday's game was Klaus-Peter Nemet, while Holger Stanislawski and his assistant André Trulsen watched the action from the stands.
Hoffenheim's new-look side acquitted themselves well and went in front on the half-hour mark. Tobias Strobl collected a pass from Philipp Klingmann and slammed his shot home to make it 1-0. Strangely enough, before half time, the referee then made a rather unexpected decision. In his opinion, the strips worn by the two sides, both dark in colour, were too similar. He ordered Hoffenheim to wear yellow bibs to make sure that players from both sides could be adequately recognized.
The confusion made little difference really, as Hoffenheim continued to create chances in the second half. Daniel Haas had been replaced with Koen Casteels, but otherwise the team remained unchanged. Joseph-Claude Gyau was proving a handful for the Ingolstadt defence, and was unlucky not to add to the lead on a number of occasions. Marvin Compper also came on shortly afterwards for his comeback from a knee injury sustained away to 1. FC Nürnberg in December.
Midway through the second half, the home side missed yet another golden chance to make it 2-0. Knowledge Musona dribbled his way into the box and was brought down, with the referee giving a clear penalty for the foul. Kai Herding, Hoffenheim's U23 captain, put the ball on the spot, but his effort was saved by keeper Ramazcan Özcan.
1899 had to wait until the 80th minute to make the game safe. Nicolai Groß powered down the wing and played in Kenan Karaman, who confidently slotted in for 2-0.
Ingolstadt, who hadn't created much all game, did manage to pull a goal back in the last minute when Ahmed Akaichi capitalized on a defensive mix-up to find the back of the net. But it was too little, too late for the 2. Bundesliga side and 1899 held on for a comfortable friendly win.
Holger Stanislawski's face more Bavarian opposition on Saturday when they take on FC Augsburg at home in the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena (Saturday, 3.30 pm).
