TSG fight back to earn late win in Gladbach

What a comeback! TSG Hoffenheim spent much of their match away to Borussia Mönchengladbach a goal behind, but found the net twice in the closing stages to claim a 2-1 (0-1) victory. Andrej Kramarić and Ryan Sessegnon were the scorers for the Kraichgau club.

Personnel & tactics:

Head coach Sebastian Hoeness made five changes to the starting XI that had been beaten 1-0 by RB Leipzig last time out. Stefan Posch, Håvard Nordtveit, Dennis Geiger, Florian Grillitsch and Ishak Belfodil replaced Kevin Akpoguma, Kasim Adams, Sebastian Rudy, Diadie Samassékou and Munas Dabbur.

Posch, Nordtveit, Kevin Vogt and Ryan Sessegnon formed the back four protecting goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Grillitsch and Geiger lined up in central defensive midfield after returning from their suspensions, while Robert Skov, Andrej Kramarić and Christoph Baumgartner formed the attacking midfield trio behind lone frontman Ishak Belfodil.

Sebastian Rudy replaced Geiger in a like-for-like midfield switch at the half-time interval. TSG then made a double substitution on 71 minutes, replacing Belfodil and Skov with Munas Dabbur and Ihlas Bebou. Kevin Akpoguma came on for Stefan Posch around 10 minutes later (79). Sensing an opportunity to get the win in the final minutes, Sebastian Hoeness brought on Sargis Adamyan for Grilltisch (85).

Moment of the match:

The 78th minute: Marcus Thumas deliberately spat into Stefan Posch's face from close range and was deservedly shown a red card for this act of serious foul play, which was spotted by the video assistant referee. A man up from that point on, TSG secured the victory courtesy of Ryan Sessegnon's late winner.

Number of the game: 14

TSG Hoffenheim found the back of the net for the 14th Bundesliga away game in succession and inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Gladbach.

Match highlights

9. Min.

The first chance: Sessegnon plays a nice cross into the middle and Belfodil heads it towards Grilltisch, but his header flies wide of the Gladbach goal.

14. Min.

Gladbach have a free-kick in a promising position 25 metres out but Stindl fires narrowly over.

18. Min.

Brilliant free-kick from Skov 22 metres out. The shot flies agonisingly wide of the upright. Sommer could do nothing about that.

21. Min.

Baumgartner loses the ball on the edge of his own box. Embolo receives it from Lainer and shoots but it is narrowly wide of the far post. TSG were lucky there.

32. Min.

Embolo bears down on Baumann from the halfway line but Vogt sprints back at an unfathomable speed and disrupts the Gladbach man as he pulls the trigger, leading him to shoot wide. Great play by Vogt.

34. Min.

Really bitter moment. Thuram is actually running out of the box but Geiger unnecessarily brings the Gladbach man down. Stindl wins the battle of wits with Baumann and slots into the bottom right corner.

36. Min.

So close! Kramarić dances past several opponents and then twists back before hammering an effort against the inside of the post from 20 metres. Sommer was beaten. It would have been a dream goal.

60. Min.

Skov delivers a corner into the middle. Nordtveit flicks the ball on towards Baumgartner in the centre but he is taken by surprise and fails to restore parity from six metres out.

65. Min.

There's the big chance to equalise: Posch chips the ball into the penalty area but Grillitsch fails to connect properly from a highly promising position and Sommer makes an easy save.

75. Min.

What brilliant play from Ihlas Bebou! The substitute wins the aerial battle and then runs onto a lovely pass from Dabbur. Bebou has the vision to pick out Kramarić in the box and the unmarked forward slots home on the volley.

86. Min.

Akpoguma crosses into the middle from the right. Adamyan cannot direct his header towards goal but Sessegnon is at the back post and stabs home from a tight angle to put TSG in the lead.
