TSG lose 1-0 to BVB despite strong performance

Despite producing their best performance in months, TSG Hoffenheim suffered a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. It was a strong opening half-hour from TSG but BVB then upped the pressure and took the lead through Julian Brandt (43). Hoffenheim increasingly grew into the match in the second period but could not convert any of their many opportunities to level the scores.

The scenario:

TSG went into the match in 15th place in the table and without a Bundesliga victory since Matchday 10. The men from Dortmund, meanwhile, arrived in the Kraichgau brimming with confidence, having won all eight of their competitive games in 2023. BVB occupied second spot, level on points with Bayern Munich and Union Berlin.

Personnel matters:

TSG coach Pellegrino Matarazzo made three changes to the team that suffered a (1-0) defeat in Augsburg. Sebastian Rudy replaced Thomas Delaney, with Kevin Akpoguma and Andrej Kramarić coming in for John Anthony Brooks and Kasper Dolberg.

Number of the game: 350

Sebastian Rudy made his 350th Bundesliga appearance today; he has played more Bundesliga matches against BVB than against any other team (26).

Moment of the match

Fisnik Asllani missed the target from close range in the 87th minute; the equaliser would have been highly deserved.

A good omen

TSG held their own against a title contender and really deserved a point. Despite the defeat, this performance will serve as a good omen for the matches to come.

Outlook:

TSG Hoffenheim will travel away to 1. FSV Mainz 05 next Saturday. Kick-off is at 15:30 CET.

Almost 1-0!

Big opportunity to take the lead! Vogt crosses to Kabak, who plays the ball into the middle, but Schlotterbeck comes sliding in to deny Baumgartner and Kabak then heads the loose ball over the crossbar. Kobel got his fingertips on it just before the header; otherwise, Ozan would have headed home.
