"We're proud of our performance"

TSG Hoffenheim put in a battling display in their 2-1 (1-1) defeat against Manchester City. Here are the reactions from the players and both coaches after the unlucky loss.

Oliver Baumann: "We played a very good game and had some very good counter-attacking opportunities. That's why it's very tough and hard to take to then go 2-1 down so close to the end. But the match showed us that we're able to compete with such an opponent. We didn't have much possession, but we still played courageously. That should encourage us. But we still need to make sure that we see such games to the end and get the point, then everyone would've been satisfied."

Kerem Demirbay: "It was a difficult match for us. In the end we lost it through one moment. It's not easy right now because we played well. We're a small club and played against one of the biggest clubs, so it's sad that we didn't pick up the point in the end. But it's important that we keep sight of the fact that we were playing against a top club. It's not easy to play against such players. We did so really well for 90 minutes. That's why we're proud of our performance, rather than the result."

Leonardo Bittencourt: "You don't qualify for the Champions League without being capable of competing. We showed in Donetsk that we can do so and we did the same again today. Unfortunately we didn't see out the whole match, perhaps we're missing a little bit of experience at this high level, because small mistakes can be decisive here. But I'm still very satisfied today with our team's display."

Julian Nagelsmann: "Despite 10 absences, we performed well. City did a lot of what we expected from them. Tactically, it was a very good performance from us. City had a lot more of the game, but much of that was by design. City obviously have a lot to offer and play with an enormously fast tempo. We created six or seven situations that could've become really dangerous. So despite the 10 absences, we did have enough situations to score more goals against a world-class team. It was extraordinary how we came out after the break. We upped our possession and had some good moments. Going up another notch in the second half against a team like that is good, we can certainly build on that."

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City coach): "We had a lot of pressure, because we lost the first home game. Then we were behind after a minute here, it wasn't easy. But we then battled our way back. As always, the team gave everything and fought and that's why this triumph is absolutely deserved. What happened on the pitch tonight sends me a lot of good signs for the club's future. I was facing Julian Nagelsmann for the first time, but I learned a lot today. He reflects a lot about the game, has visions and is creative. We need to be careful in the return fixture. Big compliment to him and his team. He was missing a lot of players and yet it was still a very solid performance with such young players."
