Hungary started the game strongly but were unable to create many chances due to Iceland’s defensive resoluteness. The match descended into a real tactical battle as both sides seemed unwilling to risk allowing chances. However, Iceland went into the break 1-0 up thanks to former Hoffenheim player Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty (40’).

The Hungarians pushed for an equaliser throughout the second half but the determined Iceland players held firm until a dangerous ball into the box clipped defender Sævarsson, who put through his own net.

Hungary face Portugal in their final group game on Wednesday, 22nd June (18:00 CEST).
