Moerstedt hat-trick not enough: DFB U19s lose to Spain

It was a match for the history books, but it did not have the happy ending that Max Moerstedt and the Germany U19s had been hoping for. The DFB team lost 6-5 to Spain after extra-time (1-0, 3-3, 6-5) in a breathtaking EURO semi-final full of twists and turns. TSG striker Max Moerstedt opened the scoring for Germany on the half-hour mark, then made it 4-4 and 5-4 in extra-time (105, 108). The 19-year-old looked to have won the match for the DFB youngsters, only for Spain to come back again and turn a dramatic game in their favour in the final minutes.

Great drama, great excitement and, in the end, great disappointment: The DFB U19s have missed out on the European Championship final. TSG player Max Moerstedt, who won the World Cup and European Championship with the Germany U17s last season, put TSG ahead from close range in true centre-forward style (28). Spain then drew themselves level, before Germany re-established the lead. It lasted until the 90th minute, but then a two-goal salvo in stoppage time appeared to put Spain on the path to victory. In the ninth minute of stoppage time, however, a very strange own goal levelled the scores and forced extra-time. But the drama didn't end with the final whistle at the end of normal time. The Spaniards initially took the lead in extra-time, only for Germany to hit back again – through TSG forward Max Moerstedt: the tall striker headed a rebound over the line from close range to restore parity (105), before then making it 5-4 after the interval (108). That was not to be the final word, however. The Spaniards levelled yet again shortly afterwards. The DFB team, who had many personnel absences to contend with, ran out of energy, enabling Spain to score the decisive goal.
