Ilzer: "It's important that we play with courage"

The champions are in town on the last matchday of the season: ahead of the game against Bayern Munich on Saturday (15:30 CEST/live ticker on tsg-hoffenheim.de), TSG head coach Christian Ilzer spoke about the still unattained survival, the opposition and Tom Bischof, among other things.

Christian Ilzer on...

...the approach: "It's a big task to finish with. The champions will demand everything of us. We have to give it all we've got. It's important that we play with courage to face up to them. We have to focus on ourselves. We have everything in our own hands. I'm confident that we can seal the deal tomorrow."

...the anticipation ahead of the season finale: "Of course, you realise that there's a certain amount of pressure when you're not safe going into the final matchday. But the boys are handling the situation extremely professionally and are training well. We are preparing for our opponents and want to deliver a good performance on the pitch. The point in Wolfsburg was extremely valuable. Now we're playing against an absolutely top-class team, we need to play with brutal energy. We have to try and counter the quality Bayern have. We want to give our best possible performance right from the start."

...a few Bayern players travelling to Ibiza: "On the one hand, it's none of my business, and on the other, it doesn't bother me. Under no circumstances should we expect a team to come to us who aren't focused on the game. What's more, Bayern have had the whole week to prepare for the game, which isn't the case for all games over the course of the season. We have to take our opponents as they are. We are preparing for the best possible opposition."

...Tom Bischof: "Tom and I have mainly spoken this week about the challenge that awaits us. Over the months, of course, we've repeatedly talked about his move to Bayern. I can only speak very highly of Tom. Despite his young age, he has always stepped up in a difficult season. He is a great guy who will soon be at Bayern."

...the atmosphere in the team: "The lads are full of energy and very determined in all the training sessions. Now it's time to get stuck in tomorrow and show what we are capable of."

...the personnel situation: "Almost everyone is available. The personnel situation has improved significantly over the season. We now have a large training squad, which shows that the medical department are doing a good job. Most of the lads will go into the summer break in top shape. I have high hopes that Grischa Prömel and Valentin Gendrey will be available for the start of preseason training ahead of the new campaign. It will take a little longer for Ozan Kabak, we're looking at August."

...the significance of the match: "In my career I've almost always had very important games at the end of the season. You have to find a good balance. No matter how much praise you're getting or how much people are talking you down. To strike this balance, it's important to prepare the team in the best possible way. It's a game that's very important for us. But we shouldn't make it too big a topic in our heads."

The opposition's form:

Bayern have been crowned champions and beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 last weekend. Vincent Kompany's team's last defeat in the Bundesliga was on 8 March against VfL Bochum (3-2).

Head-to-head record:

The scales are clearly tilted in favour of Bayern Munich. However, last season's home game gives hope: Bayern were also the visitors on the final matchday a year ago, with Hoffenheim winning 4-2 to secure a place in the Europa League.
