Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo made two changes to the starting line-up that drew 1-1 in Munich. Kevin Vogt and Finn Ole Becker replaced Ozan Kabak and Angelo Stiller.
By picking up 10 points in their last four games, TSG Hoffenheim had given themselves some breathing space in the relegation battle. Hoffenheim went into the match three points adrift of 1. FC Cologne, who were in 11th position.
Number of the game: 1
Kasper Dolberg scored his first Bundesliga goal. His powerful shot into the left corner was unsavable for Cologne's Marvin Schwäbe.
Moment of the match
The handball penalty: Linton Maina cut into the middle from the left and went for goal. John Anthony Brooks blocked the attempt but touched the ball with his hand. VAR intervened and a penalty was awarded. Florian Kainz stepped up and coolly slotted home, putting Cologne on the path to victory (18).
TSG Hoffenheim will travel to RB Leipzig next week. Kick-off on Saturday is at 15:30 CET.

Kainz scores from the spot
Maina shoots from the left side following a counter and Brooks blocks the attempt with his hand. VAR intervenes and a penalty kick is awarded. Kainz steps up and coolly slots it down the middle.
Top save from Baumann
Baumann has to pull out all the stops to prevent it from going to 2-0. Selke wins the aerial battle in the middle and heads a cross towards goal, but the TSG shot-stopper turns the ball over the bar.
That was too easy. Kainz is not closed down on the left and is afforded lots of space to cross. Selke gets the better of Akpoguma and heads home. Baumann gets a hand to it but cannot prevent it from going in.
Hoffenheim's biggest opportunity
There it is, the first real opportunity. A lovely attack culminates in Baumgartner playing a ball with the outside of his boot into the path Angeliño, who goals for goal but cannot get the better of Schwäbe.
Bebou goes it alone
There’s suddenly a great chance for TSG to counter. Bebou turns on the afterburners and has two options – Dabbur on the left and Kramarić on the right – but the striker goes it alone and fires over.
The chances are increasing
Cologne are defending with everything they’ve got. Kramarić squares to Kadeřábek and receives the return ball in the penalty box, but his shot from eight metres out is blocked.
All over in stoppage time: Baumann saves to deny Schindler but is then powerless to prevent Thielmann’s deflected follow-up from close range.
Dabbur is stopped at the penalty area but the ball falls to Dolberg, who shoots from the edge of the box and fires powerfully into the left corner.
