Dramatic defeat in Dortmund

TSG Hoffenheim produced a strong performance but were ultimately condemned to a late 3-2 (0-0) defeat in a pulsating encounter away to Borussia Dortmund. After Munas Dabbur slotted home in the 90th minute to level the score at 2-2, it initially looked like the spoils would be shared – but then Erling Haaland popped up in stoppage time to seal the win for Dortmund in a frenetic Bundesliga match.

Personnel & tactics:

Head coach Sebastian Hoeness made one change to the starting XI that drew 2-2 with Union Berlin last time out, with Dennis Geiger replacing Munas Dabbur. Goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was protected by an unchanged back four of Kevin Akpoguma, Kevin Vogt, Stefan Posch and David Raum – the latter of whom received his first senior Germany call-up on Friday. Geiger began in midfield alongside Angelo Stiller and Sebastian Rudy. Jacob Bruun Larsen and Christoph Baumgartner lined up on the flanks either side of lone frontman Andrej Kramarić.

TSG made an attacking substitution at the break, bringing on Georginio Rutter for Stiller. After going 2-1 down, Sebastian Hoeness brought on two more attacking players in Sargis Adamyan and Mijat Gaćinović, who replaced Baumgartner and Bruun Larsen (69). Towards the end, Geiger picked up a knock and Munas Dabbur was brought on in his stead to inject attacking momentum (83) – and he did exactly that by slotting home to equalise at 2-2.

Moment of the match:

Stoppage time: Munas Dabbur first deservedly restored parity for TSG, but it was BVB that had the luck on their side. Despite Oliver Baumann making a sensational double stop to keep the danger at bay, Erling Haaland hammered home the follow-up from close range to seal the victory.

Number of the game: 9

The 3-2 loss means that TSG Hoffenheim have tasted defeat for the first time following a nine-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga that stretched back into last season.

Match highlights

3. Min.

TSG come racing out of the blocks. Baumgartner wins back possession of the ball and switches the play to Bruun Larsen, who threads it through to Rudy. He crosses from the left of the box towards Kramaric, whose header hits the bar.

4. Min.

TSG are hit on the counter following a corner. Haaland plays it through to Reyna, but his shot is slightly lacking placement and Baumann makes the save.

39. Min.

Hoffenheim suddenly have a big opportunity to take the lead: Geiger does brilliantly well to hold off an opponent and carry the ball 50 metres. Bruun Larsen receives his pass and plays it to Baumgartner, but Kobel makes a strong block with his foot to keep the shot out.

48. Min.

TSG make the better start after the interval, but it's Dortmund who take the lead with their first foray forward of the second period. Reyna is afforded too much space and he picks out the bottom corner from 15 metres out.

59. Min.

Baumgartner brilliantly wins the ball back in his own half and plays it through to Kramaric. The Croat beats Witsel for pace and goes clean through on Kobel, but loses the one-on-one with the keeper.

61. Min.

The equaliser and it is deserved: Baumgartner is perfectly played through by Geiger and has lots of space on the right of the box. The Austrian fires neatly past Kobel and inside the far post from a tight angle.

66. Min.

Malen tries to go it alone following a counter-attack and cuts into the middle from the left. But Baumann gets down quickly and saves his shot at the near post.

69. Min.

That's too easy. Guerreiro's cross is actually relatively harmless, but it is cleared straight to the feet of Bellingham and the Englishmann drives a low effort into the bottom corner to put Dortmund back in front.

89. Min.

TSG don't give up and get their reward. Akpoguma flicks on a corner-kick towards the back post, where Dabbur is waiting to slot home from close range.

90 + 1. Min.

It can't be! Baumann initially makes a brilliant double save to deny Brandt and Moukoko from close range, but the goalie is powerless to prevent the third attempt from Haaland going in.
