Sevilla to attend season opening event
The home game against the UEFA Europa League record champions from Spain will be the final friendly fixture of pre-season for TSG, whose competitive campaign kicks off the following weekend with a DFB Cup First Round tie away to Würzburger Kickers – precise date and time yet to be confirmed – in what will be Alfred Schreuder's first game in the dugout as head coach. As has been the case in recent years too, the visitors to the season opening event can expect an array of activities before and after the match along the event mile in front of the PreZero Arena. Naturally, the fans will have the opportunity to collect the signatures of the entire senior squad during an autograph-signing session too.
The recent success of their Andalusia-based opponents has been one of the most special and remarkable stories in European club football over the past few years. Without a real chance to win the title in their domestic league on account of the three-pronged dominance of Barcelona, Real and Atlético, Sevilla have become specialists in Europa League success. The club have reached the final on five occasions, winning every single one, and even claimed three successive titles between 2014 and 2016. Last term, the team finished their Primera División campaign in sixth place, meaning they will once again be involved in European competition when the new season gets underway.
Star-studded squad
The team is brimming with top international players, including the Danish central defender Simon Kjær, the Spanish international Jesus Navás, the Argentine midfielder Éver Banega and the French forward Wissam Ben Yedder. The new Sevilla manager is no unknown quantity either: no less than former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui agreed to take over the reins this summer.
All further details concerning the season opening event will be published shortly on our digital channels, with info on the start of advance ticket sales to follow in calendar weeks 27 and 28. TSG will face Sevilla again the next day, on Sunday 4 August, in a behind-closed-doors training match.
