Germany beat Chile to win Confed Cup

Germany defeated Chile in the final of the Confederations Cup without Hoffenheim duo Sandro Wagner and Kerem Demirbay. Joachim Löw's team beat Chile 1-0 in the final in St. Petersburg. Former TSG man Eduardo Vargas was on the losing side.

Germany, who started with ex-Hoffenheim midfielder Sebastian Rudy, were put under pressure early on by the Chileans. The South Americans were not clinical enough in front of goal, however, and this was to be the story of the match. Timo Werner capitalised on a mistake at the back to steal the ball and square it to Lars Stindl for a tap-in in the 20th minute.

Despite going behind, Chile continued to have more of the game, but Germany had the better chances towards the end of the first half, looking increasingly dangerous on the counter attack. Leon Goretzka missed the biggest chance for the Germans shortly before half-time. The match became a feisty affair after the break. Most of the game was played in midfield, but the Germans kept control of the match, despite the Chileans becoming more and more physical.

Emre Can came on for Werner in the 79th minute to add presence to the German midfield, but the Chileans tried harder and harder to find the equaliser. Ex-TSG defender Niklas Süle came on in stoppage time for Germany who saw out the match to win the Confederations Cup for the first time.
