Szalai fires Hungary to historic EUROs win
It was an open game in Bordeaux, with both sides allowing lots of space, especially in midfield. The Austrian side, with former TSG player David Alaba in midfield, had three good chances in the first half. Alaba hit the post from distance, before Gabor Kiraly saved well from Zlatko Junuzovic. Hungary had chances of their own, but the deadlock would not be broken until the second half.
Just after the hour mark, Szalai found himself in the right place at the right time to fire his nation into the lead. A goal for the history books. When he was substituted shortly afterwards, it was to the applause of the watching fans and the rest of his teammates.
The Austrians were down to ten men after 65 minutes, when Dragovic received a second yellow card, and three minutes before full time Zoltan Stieber wrapped up the win for Hungary with a fine lobbed goal.
Hungary’s next group match is on Saturday against Iceland at 18:00 CEST.
