Rudy impresses in
World Cup final rematch

The Germany national team suffered a 4-2 defeat in Düsseldorf against their World Cup final opponents Argentina, their first match since that night in Rio. In what appeared to be a complete disaster shortly after half time with the scoreline at 4-0, was in fact an enjoyable night of football. No one will really hold the defeat against them. After all, Germany showed just what they are capable of in the second half.

Tactics and line-up:

Lahm, Mertesacker, Klose - retired. Schweinsteiger, Hummels, Boateng - injured. Germany manager Joachim Löw started with nine World Champions on the pitch in the rematch of the World Cup final. The recently fit-again Mario Gomez and Marco Reus – who didn't travel to Brazil due to injuries – were back in action. The formation was the same as during the World Cup, 4-2-3-1. Argentina's new manager Gerardo Martino, who was at FC Barcelona last season, put seven World Cup final participants on the pitch. It was clear that both sides took the friendly in Düsseldorf seriously.

Hoffenheim involvement:

Sebastian Rudy was brought on for Toni Kroos in the 71st minute to a loud reception from the fans. The TSG midfielder was particularly convincing on the pitch. He was moved about a lot, was constantly open and didn't lose the ball unnecessarily. All in all, it was a commanding appearance in defensive midfield.

Moment of the match:

The moment of the evening took place before the match had started. Assistant manager Hansi Flick, World Cup winning captain Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker and World Cup record goalscorer Miroslav Klose were all given an official farewell, without a big fuss, but with a lot of style. Bravo, DFB.

Star of the game:

An Argentinean wasn't supposed to be named in this segment, but Angel di Maria certainly deserves to be after his performance against the World Champions. He steered Gerardo Martino's team to victory with three assists and one goal. In hindsight, maybe it was a good thing that the new Manchester United star missed the World Cup final due to injury.
