Goals a plenty, but even more donations

On Friday evening in Großeicholzheim, it was clear that the good cause took pride of place. There was however, no lack of excitement either. The 2,550 spectators who came to support the good cause saw a clear 13-2 victory for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Goals for TSG came from Takashi Usami (5), Sven Schipplock (3), Joselu (2), Matthieu Delpierre, Sandro Wieser and Marvin Compper.

TSG, who as a result of the international break had a smaller squad, first played SV Großeicholzheim. The game had been organised by Johannes Galm's team-mates. Since the beginning of the year, Johannes has been paralysed from the chest down after a swimming accident and his family pay for his medical support. In the second half, a selection of regional players took to the field.

The guests, whose appearance fee had also been donated, were involved in a goal-heavy spectacle. In the first half, both Sven Schipplock and Takashi Usami helped themselves to hat-tricks. Joselu scored a brace before the break and just before the half-time whistle, Matthieu Delpierre got on the score-sheet as well. In between the goal mayhem, in the 36th minute, Ralf Zilling scored for SV Großeicholzheim picking up a consolation goal.

The biggest highlight of the night was during the half time break. The paralysed Johannes Galm came out of his rehab and along with his family, thanked everyone involved. The benefits game was one of many campaigns from which funds have been collected for the financial support of the family. An example of which is the reconstruction of their home to improve wheelchair access. In the presence of Markus Babbel, who insisted on having a chat with Johannes, the young man received donation checks of up to €22,000. This highlight was surpassed moments later, when it was announced that €50,000 had been raised in total. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to that sum.

The second half was somewhat irrelevant after the highlight during the break. Hoffenheim made five changes for the second half. Tim Paterok took to the field to replace Tim Wiese, alongside Ahmed Sassi, Yanick Thermann, Patrick Schorr and Leon Fesser. The group of regional players set themselves the target of correcting the score-line, and got on the way to doing so when Daniel Breitinger scored to make it 9-2 in 54th minute. Only two minutes later though, TSG were at it again, Sandro Wieser taking the score to double figures. Further goals came from Usami, who finished with five, and Marvin Compper who scored the last goal to make it 13-2 to TSG at the final whistle.
