Hübner leaves TSG Hoffenheim to join DFB
"Hübi didn't just have great leadership skills as a player. As co-coach of the first team he also proved his individual qualities time and time again," said Andreas Schicker, Managing Director for Sport at TSG. "As a former TSG captain, Hübi knows how to deal with different personalities, and how to address them in the right way in the right situation. Then there's his exceptional understanding of football, which will undoubtedly help him enormously in his coaching career going forward. Hübi is an absolute icon of TSG, and we would have been very happy to continue working with him. However, he came to us and strongly expressed his wish to take the opportunity to work with the German national team. After some very respectful and intense conversations, we ultimately agreed to Hübi's request. We are very grateful for his years of service to TSG and wish him all the best for his new role with the DFB."
"I'm incredibly grateful for the past nine years here at TSG Hoffenheim. The club and especially the TSG fans have a very special place in my heart - I will certainly never forget my time here. And I'm confident that we'll see each other again someday," said Hübner. "But when I was asked by Julian and the DFB if I could see myself in the role of co-coach for the German national team, I knew immediately: this was chance that I really couldn't miss, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure that everyone can understand that."
Benjamin Hübner moved to the Kraichgau from FC Ingolstadt in July 2016. At Hoffenheim he quickly took on a strong leadership role and became an icon for TSG fans. The now-35 year old former professional player was captain of the club and always took the lead. Hübner's career was unfortunately plagued by injuries, but the former centre-back still played 103 competitive games for TSG (9 goals / 11 assists) in the Bundesliga, DFB Cup, Champions League qualifications, Champions League and Europa League.
Once his active career had ended, Hübner completed, among other things, a trainee programme at TSG in 2023, with placements in the sports management, marketing, media and sponsoring departments. However, Hübner always saw his future as being back on the pitch, and was made co-coach for the Hoffenheim Under-19s at the TSG Academy before becoming a key part of the coaching team for the Hoffenheim first team in February 2024.
At the DFB, Hübner will be continuing the tradition of former TSG players and coaches in the German national team circle. The 35 year old, who was born in Wiesbaden, will be replacing former Hoffenheim first team player Sandro Wagner as co-coach with immediate effect. In joining the DFB he will also be joining Julian Nagelsmann and Benjamin Glück, who both have an extremely successful history at TSG.
