Prömel: "That was not enough"

Here's what the players and coaches had to say after the 4-1 loss away to 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Oliver Baumann: "Not much came off today. I still have no explanation for that. Nothing worked both on the ball and off the ball. We came through the first half but we were overrun in the second half. We had a good move and scored a goal from it. It was a bad day and a very bad performance. We're all extremely disappointed and extremely frustrated. Something is possible this season, but we need to work on ensuring that something like this does not happen again. It was too easy in all respects. We were completely inferior. There have been better and worse spells throughout the entire season. Today we had an extremely bad day, that cannot happen any more. We could've played for another hour and it probably wouldn't have gotten any better."

Grischa Prömel: "It was not enough from everyone today. We set ourselves the goal of Europe last week, but then to perform like that is simply not enough. We lost all the challenges, had no intensity, no creativity, plus excessively large gaps and what felt like only one chance. That's not enough in the Bundesliga. We needed to be cleverer after taking the lead and defend in numbers. If need be, you have to chase when things aren't going well on the footballing front. We have great individual quality, but that's not enough. We're a team and we all want to pull in the same direction, but the implementation is not right. What we produced today was nowhere near enough. If we play like that, we won't get any points."

Anton Stach: "It already wasn't going optimally in the first half and we were fortunate to be ahead. In the changing rooms, we spoke about going out and giving it everything we had once again. We knew precisely how they would play but then we didn't embrace the fight. Mainz were superior in all respects today, wanted the victory more and deservedly won; you have to clearly say that. We have to work on ensuring that we always get stuck in and that it becomes more difficult to create chances against us. We're giving too much away."

Pellegrino Matarazzo: "It was a deserved win for Mainz also in terms of the margin. I'm very disappointed with the performance. We did take a fortunate lead but conceded two quick goals after the break. It is our ambition to put up a better fight. We were not capable of competing with Mainz. We won't be able to move on from this off quickly. Instead, we'll have to analyse it and process it."

Bo Henriksen (1. FSV Mainz 05 coach): "We played a very good game. When we gave the ball away, Hoffenheim showed their quality. But we were well prepared for it. We stuck to our plan throughout the match. We still had a few problems in the first half but things went significantly better after the break. We said at half-time that we need to continue in the same vein. Fortunately, it worked out."
