Baumann: "I can only apologise to the fans"

Here's what Oliver Baumann and Sebastian Hoeness had to say after the 5-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Oliver Baumann: "The defeat is the culmination of the past few weeks. We actually got off to a good start, but then made it too easy for Gladbach. We won far too few challenges and Gladbach were able to simply stroll through the midfield. We've conceded far too many goals this season. We can't take the kind of performances we've produced over the past nine games into the new season. There are now a few things to sort out internally. Our drop-off is inexplicable. It wasn't just a bad phase; it was nine games. That's too long. There is a feeling of great emptiness inside me. I can only apologise to the fans; you can't perform like that. We're all extremely disappointed. If you're 15th at the start and then finish ninth, that's okay. But we were up there for so long and Europe was within reach – so it's disappointing in the end. We'll do everything we can to do better next season. We owe that to the club and the fans."

Sebastian Hoeness: "I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated. We simply gave the game away. We had a lot of players missing again today. Nonetheless, the boys set out to achieve something and took the lead too. Andrej Kramarić even had a chance to make it 2-0, but instead the game became really open. Then all of a sudden, we're in the dressing room and we're 3-1 down. The team seized the initiative at the start of the second half but the goal for 4-1 was decisive. The season was very good for two-thirds, but the run towards the end has overshadowed that. During this period, the season fell apart."
