Kobel moves to Stuttgart

Gregor Kobel is leaving Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim and joining newly-promoted outfit VfB Stuttgart. The 22-year-old Swiss goalkeeper, who had a contract in the Kraichgau until 30 June 2021, already spent last season on loan with the Swabian side.

"Gregor has undergone a very positive development in the past few years at TSG and the clubs where he has been on loan. After analysing the situation intensively together, we've now found a solution that is satisfactory for both parties," said TSG Hoffenheim director of football Alexander Rosen. "We didn't want to deny him the opportunity to become the No.1 at a club in the top flight, especially since we have great confidence in Oliver Baumann and our current goalkeeping team."

Then aged 16, Kobel joined TSG at A-youth level from the junior squad of Swiss Super League club Grasshopper Zurich in the summer of 2014. He then signed a professional contract in Sinsheim for the 2016/17 season and became part of the goalkeeping contingent in the senior squad alongside regulars Oliver Baumann and Alexander Stolz. To ensure more playing time, TSG and Kobel agreed on a loan to league rivals FC Augsburg in January 2019. This was followed by another loan move – this time to Stuttgart in the second tier – last summer. In total the shot-stopper, who has recently been part of the Switzerland senior squad, has made 17 Bundesliga appearances and played in 31 Bundesliga 2 matches. In addition, he has played six times in the DFB Cup.
