Landmark occasion for cup hero Baumann

Oliver Baumann has become a legend at Hoffenheim since arriving in 2014. The goalkeeper is set to make his 300th Bundesliga appearance overall and his 169th for TSG – more than any other shot-stopper in the club's history – when they visit Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (15:30 CET). His heroics in the DFB Cup First Round shootout victory over Würzburger Kickers highlighted how important he is to the team.

The TSG faithful applauded Oliver Baumann for several minutes after the match. The goalkeeper had earlier saved two of their third-division opponent's spot-kicks in the shootout and paved the way for Hoffenheim to reach the Second Round of the DFB Cup. The 29-year-old Baumann first stopped Würzburg's third penalty from Fabio Kaufmann and then made the decisive save as the penalty shootout went into sudden death, jumping down into the corner to keep out Henrik Hansen's strike. Hoffenheim were through to the next round.

Baumann cut an exuberant figure as he celebrated in front of the travelling supporters, though he later had some words of warning for his team-mates. "We cannot allow ourselves to take the lead twice and be pegged back both times. We need to work on that," said the Breisach native, although he was quick to point out that there had been some positives too. "I actually don't think it was a bad performance. We're a tad dissatisfied, but all in all we're happy that we're through to the next round."

First Bundesliga match on Sunday

Attentions have now turned to the Bundesliga, with TSG Hoffenheim preparing to get their 2019/20 campaign underway with a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. It'll be a special occasion for shot-stopper Baumann, who is set to make his 300th appearance in the German top flight. No current TSG player can match that tally.

The former Freiburg man has made 168 of his 299 appearances in a TSG Hoffenheim shirt, meaning that he has played more Bundesliga matches for the club than any other goalkeeper and he occupies fourth place in the overall list: only the trio of Andreas Beck (216), the returning Sebastian Rudy (195) and Sejad Salihovic (171) have featured in the Bundesliga more times for the Kraichgau club.

Praise from Alexander Rosen

Director of football Alexander Rosen is proud that the custodian has been a TSG man for so long. "I still have vivid memories of when we first brought Oli in," he said. "Back then, the goalkeeping position was the source of quiet unrest in Hoffenheim. Oli plugged this gap from the very first day and has continued to do so until now. We're proud that he has already completed so many Bundesliga matches for us," he said after Baumann made his 150th appearance for the club.

At the weekend, the gloveman will be beginning his fifth Bundesliga campaign in a Hoffenheim shirt. His previous achievements at the club include being the No. 1 in a team that sensationally avoid relegation in the second half of 2015/16, before subsequently qualifying for the Europa League in 2017 and the Champions League a year later. A safe pair of hands and the record appearance-maker in his position, Baumann has already forever cemented his place in the history books as a club legend. His task now will be to reach new highs.
