After a strong showing last season which saw them finish second in the Bundesliga, the ''Miners'' have fallen well short of expectations this time round. After Matchday 29, Schalke occupy 15th place in the table, with only six points separating them from the relegation play-off place. …old acquaintances will be reunited?

Schalke coach Huub Stevens will face TSG for the first time since he stepped down as manager of the club back in February 2016. The Dutchman replaced Domenico Tedesco on an interim basis four weeks ago. There will also be a reunion with Sebastian Rudy, who played for TSG from 2010 to 2017. Mark Uth, who moved to Schalke from Hoffenheim last summer, will miss the match as he is sidelined with an adductor injury.
