Dramatic late penalty saves Vargas and Chile

The Chile national team and Eduardo Vargas have won their second group game of Copa America after defeating Bolivia 2-1. With this victory, the defending champions have preserved their chances of proceeding to the next stage. Qualification for the knockout round will now come down to the match against Panama on Thursday.

La Roja began the game against Bolivia without Eduardo Vargas and made hard work of the match. Bayern star Arturo Vidal put Chile into the lead just minutes before the break, but Bolivia equalised in the 61st minute through Yasmani Campos. Vargas had been brought on three minutes earlier. By the end of the game he had played a huge role in the drama of Foxborough.

Shortly before the end of the match, the TSG striker tried an overhead kick in the Chileans’ box, and injured Ronald Eguino in the process. Because of the Bolivian’s treatment, the referee decided to play eight minutes of stoppage time. Then, in the 97th minute, he blew his whistle to award a penalty for handball that even the Chileans hadn’t expected. Arturo Vidal stepped up and converted this huge chance into victory in the tenth minute of added time.
