Werder Bremen match reaction

We heard from a few of the players as well as Thomas Eichin and new TSG manager Julian Nagelsmann post match.

Julian Nagelsmann: In the end it’s a point gained for us, because Bremen had the better of the chances in the long run. It was particularly difficult in the last 15 minutes when we were a man down. I’m pleased we were able to hold out. Our strongest spell came right after the restart - unfortunately we weren’t able to make the most of it when we won back possession. The 3-5-2 was specifically for Werder Bremen, but the formation itself is not that important. What counts are the principles of attack and defence: the same in every game, every training session and in every formation.

Thomas Eichin: I don’t know whether that was a point gained or two points lost. Hoffenheim looked dangerous throughout. Nevertheless we should be looking to win home games in the relegation battle. Hoffenheim have shown, as have we, that it’s far from over.

Nadiem Amiri: I think a point each is fair. It was a good performance and looked a lot better than our previous ones. We obviously had a bit of luck when Werder hit the post, and it did get quite difficult when we went a man down. We played our counterattacks extremely well, only the final ball lacked a few times too many. We were brave today.

Oliver Baumann: With ten men we gave everything to hold on to the point and showed great character. We wanted three points, but after playing the last 15 minutes with ten men, we have to be happy with the point.

Clemens Fritz: We were asleep for the first 15 minutes or so of both halves. The fact that we were able to find the equaliser so quickly after going behind was very important. We tried to play attacking football, but Hoffenheim were strong. Especially with the long vertical balls forward, they caused us problems throughout. Still, we had the better chances.

Jannik Vestergaard: We had enough chances to win the game. We desperately wanted the win, because it’s not been going well for us at home this season, and we could have really extended our lead on Hoffenheim. Unfortunately we were not able to. The fact that we defended well and barely gave them a sniff at goal is a positive we can take from the game. Hoffenheim found it difficult to create chances for themselves.
