Julian Nagelsmann to take charge of TSG first team from 2016/17

TSG Hoffenheim have set out plans for the future well in advance. From the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Julian Nagelsmann will manage the first team as the successor to Huub Stevens, whose contract runs until June 2016. The 28-year-old is currently in charge of the U19s and is working towards his coaching licence.

"Despite our difficult situation at the moment, it's important to set down a marker for the future," said chief executive Dr. Peter Görlich. The appointment of Julian Nagelsmann to take over as manager next year "shows that we're planning for the long term and staying true to our philosophy to bring through talent from our youth department," said Görlich. Nagelsmann's contract runs until 30th June 2019.

"For many reasons, we're convinced that Julian is a perfect fit," director of football Rosen added. “He has shown through his work with the achtzehn99 ACADEMY that he's one of the biggest coaching talents in the area.” In both of the last two seasons, he has led Hoffenheim to the final of the German U19 Championship, winning in 2014. In the 2012/13 season, he gained invaluable first-team experience at Hoffenheim as assistant manager.

Nagelsmann, who is currently studying for his pro licence, is familiar with the structure of the club and the footballing philosophy at Hoffenheim. Shareholder Dietmar Hopp considers him therefore to be "the logical decision. We want to keep working with our youth department, and that applies to the manager too."

"I'm excited about the challenges ahead and I'm grateful for the belief placed in me," said Julian Nagelsmann. In the next few months, his priorities will be his studies as he obtains his licence, as well as his U19 team, who “have big hopes for this season".
