Hoffenheim narrowly beaten in Leverkusen

TSG’s first game of the season ended 2-1 to Leverkusen. Steven Zuber put Markus Gisdol’s side ahead after just five minutes, but goals from Stefan Kießling and Julian Brandt turned the game around for the home side.

Tactics and Line-up:

Markus Gisdol made four changes to the side that went out to 1860 Munich last week: Jin-Su Kim filled in at left-back, Eugen Polanski started in defensive midfield, Steven Zuber occupied the left wing and Kevin Kurányi celebrated his Hoffenheim debut and his return to the Bundesliga. Also in the starting XI: Oliver Baumann between the sticks behind Pavel Kaderabek at right-back, and the central defensive partnership of Fabian Schär and Niklas Süle; captain Pirmin Schwegler faced his former club in defensive midfield, Jonathan Schmid took his place on the right wing and Kevin Volland made his 100th Bundesliga appearance in a Hoffenheim shirt in attacking midfield.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

In the 78th minute Oliver Baumann showed his quality. Kießling’s close-range header was met by tremendous reflexes from TSG’s number 1, who made several top saves throughout the game. This was the pick of the bunch, and indeed the moment of the match for Hoffenheim.

NUMBER(S) OF THE MATCH: 100 AND 1

The encounter marked Kevin Volland’s 100th Bundesliga game, all of which have been for Hoffenheim. He has achieved this feat after only three seasons and one game at the club, a remarkable run for the midfield machine. In addition, Steven Zuber bagged his first Bundesliga goal and Philipp Ochs made his debut appearance in Germany’s top-flight.
