Mainz 05 match reaction

Here is the match reaction after the 4-2 defeat to Mainz.

Markus Gisdol:I can't explain how or why we gave the game away the way we did. Up until Mainz's first goal, we were enjoying our best performance of the season. It's really frustrating for us not to reward a good performance with points.

Thomas Tuchel: We were clearly the worse side for 65 minutes and deserved to be behind. It could have been 3-0 or 4-0. We were well behind our expectations in every single department. We could easily have lost and I'd be sitting here congratulating them. But the big compliment ends up going to my players, who clearly carried on believing. To be honest, I didn't when it was 2-0. We're absolutely delighted with the three points.

Kevin Volland:You're left annoyed after these types of games. We just stopped playing football after the first goal we conceded, and we could have been even further ahead at that point. I've no idea why we played the way we did. We can't let that happen. Every defeat hurts, but today in particular.

Andreas Beck:It's difficult to explain what happened today. We were playing one of our best, if not the best game of the season until they scored their first goal. Then, in a matter of moments everything changes and we start conceding goals. It's hard to comprehend. We completely lost our rhythm, made simple mistakes and offered the opposition chances that will be taken clinically in the Bundesliga. We can't give away a game like that. They're just gifted points.
