Ryan Babel snapped up by 1899 Hoffenheim

1899 Hoffenheim completed the transfer of Ryan Babel from Liverpool FC on Tuesday having signed the Dutch international to a two-and-a-half year deal, which includes the option of a one-year extension.

The 24-year old put pen to paper on a contract running until 30.6.2013 having passed his medical at the club. Babel has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season, including matches in the UEFA Europa League, scoring two goals in the process. He has had to endure a turbulent time with the Merseyside club after Rafael Benitez signed him in the summer of 2007. After enjoying a successful first season under the Spaniard, Babel gradually faded out of the first team plans and became more and more frustrated with his bit part role at the club. He looked to have secured a new lease of life under Roy Hodgson and put in impressive performances most notably against Aston Villa. In total the Dutch forward made 146 appearances for Liverpool, 81 of which came from the bench and notched up 22 goals in his time with the club. He boasts skill, pace, the ability and determination to take on his marker and can play up front or on the wings, though his preferred position is through the middle.

"Ryan was definitely a player on our wish list in terms of attacking options", explained head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli adding that, "despite his age, Ryan brings a lot of experience with him, which is something that can help strengthen our squad." The manager wasn't the only person at the club who was happy with the news: "We're proud to be able to secure the signing of an internationally experienced player such as Ryan Babel and from a top club too", exclaimed manager Ernst Tanner. "We're convinced that his character and sporting qualities will turn out to be a big win for us in the end." Babel himself seemed excited about the move stating: "I'm looking forward to my new challenge in Hoffenheim. My first impressions have been nothing but positive and I'm hoping to start making my mark on the team as soon as possible."
