Jaissle facing operation

Before being injured in pre-season, Matthias Jaissle was in great form. Now it has been confirmed that the 23-year-old injury-plagued defender must have surgery. On Thursday he will have an operation in Basel on his right heel. How long he will be out of action is not yet known. achtzehn99.de caught up with him to hear first-hand of his fighting qualities.

Matze, has the news that you will have an operation shocked you?

Well, in the last few weeks I had the feeling that it could come down to needing an operation. So I did have a bit of time to adjust to the situation. But it's still a bitter pill to swallow, no question.

At the time you had a strong pre-season behind you.

Yes that's right I was feeling great. I was pleased to be able to play again after being out injured for so long.

How seriously has this setback affected you?

It has affected. But I've come back from injuries before; last time I was out for nearly two years and I got myself fit again. This time is no different. I'm a fighter.

Yes we can certainly see that.

The thought of giving up has never crossed my mind. There's a lot more to come from me.

Have you spoken much with manager Holger Stanislawski about the situation?

Yes for sure, and he has helped me a lot. He's given me the belief that everyone at the club is behind me and supporting me. He told me to take my time and not put any pressure on myself whatsoever. It's key that when I am back, I'm 100% fit.

In the last few weeks you've received a lot of kind words from the fans.

Yes that's right. Our fans are fantastic. I read all the kind and encouraging words on my facebook page, and that helps me. It's also nice to know that the fans haven't forgotten you. That really motivates me to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.
