Top before the winter break, 1899 Hoffenheim lost ground in the title race after recording three draws and a defeat against Leverkusen. Andreas Beck realised his dream of playing in the Germany national team when came on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Norway in Düsseldorf.

The three draws against Gladbach, Stuttgart and Dortmund weren't quite in keeping with the club's early-season promise, but still showed that the club was more than a match for many sides in the top tier.
