When Alfons Higl joined Hoffenheim as manager of the U19s in summer 2011, he brought a young student with him, who had done a good job up to then in Higl’s Football Academy, and made him his assistant manager. Matthias Kaltenbach still has to grin today when he sees photos of himself with a bowl haircut from that time. He has less good memories from his first season in the TSG dugout though, after it almost ended in relegation from the U19 Bundesliga. Higl left, Kaltenbach stayed – and was later assistant to Thomas Krücken (2012/13) as well as Julian Nagelsmann (2013-16), with whom he guided the team to the 2014 German Championship. After Nagelsmann’s promotion to head coach in February 2016, the Freiburg-born coach took charge of the side for the first time. Under his leadership, the U19s defended their Süddeutsche league title and were runners-up in the German Championship.
