TSG lose to Leverkusen in intense battle

TSG Hoffenheim put in a strong performance, but ultimately came away empty-handed as they lost 4-2 (1-2) at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Georginio (22) and Christoph Baumgartner (36) gave Hoffenheim the lead twice in the first half, but two goals in quick succession from Moussa Diaby (73) and Patrik Schick (76) put Leverkusen in command. Lucas Alario then put the result beyond doubt in injury time (90+1). The defeat means that TSG can no longer qualify for European competition.

Personnel and tactics:

Head coach Sebastian Hoeness made two changes to his starting line-up from the 4-3 defeat against SC Freiburg. Stefan Posch replaced Kevin Akpoguma in central defence and together with Pavel Kadeřábek, Kevin Vogt and David Raum formed the back four in front of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Diadie Samassékou anchored the midfield from the number-six role, Christoph Baumgartner and Angelo Stiller played ahead of him in the mezzala position, while Munas Dabbur played in the hole behind the front two of Andrej Kramarić and Georginio, who replaced Ihlas Bebou.

TSG made their first change in the 54th minute, with Ihlas Bebou coming on for Georginio. With 20 minutes to go, Hoffenheim made two further changes: Robert Skov and Sebastian Rudy came on for Dabbur and Baumgartner (69). After Leverkusen took the lead, TSG went all-out attack and brought on Jacob Bruun Larsen for Samassékou (78).

Moment of the match:

The 79th minute: substitute Jacob Bruun Larsen posed an immediate threat, hitting the upright with a shot on goal. The rebound fell to Andrej Kramarić, who only had to finish in front of an open goal, but he missed the target and blew a huge chance to equalise.

Number of the game: 8

The opening goal of the game was Georginio's eighth of the current campaign, meaning the Frenchman is now TSG's leading goalscorer this season.
