Head coach Sebastian Hoeness made four changes to the starting XI that lost 2-1 last time out. A number of absences meant it was an entirely new back three in front of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, with Stefan Posch, Håvard Nordtveit and Chris Richards forming the defensive trio. Ihlas Bebou started on the right flank, while Pavel Kadeřábek moved over to the left wing. Diadie Samassékou, Angelo Stiller and Christoph Baumgartner all kept their places in an unchanged midfield, with Georginio returning to the starting XI and playing alongside Andrej Kramarić in attack.
TSG made a double substitution with 20 minutes to go, bringing on Munas Dabbur and Jacob Bruun Larsen for Georginio and Baumgartner (70). Robert Skov then made his comeback in place of Bebou in the 80th minute.

The 80th minute: Robert Skov came off the bench to replace Ihlas Bebou and make his comeback after a 155-day injury lay-off. Some good news at least on an otherwise difficult evening.

Match highlights
TSG fail to deal with a free-kick from the flank. Szoboszlai delivers the ball in towards Nkunku, who dribbles past Kadeřábek in the penalty area before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
TSG are hit on the counter: Laimer loses the ball on the edge of the box but it is deflected into the path of Halstenberg, who drills the ball into the bottom corner.
TSG create their best attack: Kramarić lofts in a free-kick towards Kadeřábek, who heads the ball across the face of goal. But both Baumgartner's shot and Kramarić's follow-up are unfortunately blocked in the area.
Another counter: Simakan intercepts the ball, runs 50 metres into the Hoffenheim half and crosses towards Nkunku, who heads the ball into the middle for Szoboszlai to tap home from close range and make it 3-0.
