Hübner extends contract with TSG

Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim have extended captain Benjamin Hübner's contract. The 32-year-old central defender, who is already in his sixth season with the Kraichgau outfit, has penned a deal that runs until 30 June 2023 and contains an option for a further season.

"Due to his qualities and character, Benni is a central figure in our squad," said TSG director of football Alexander Rosen. "The way Benni has performed in recent games since returning from a lengthy absence, with almost no teething problems, has been exceptional in every respect. But he is not only an important factor for us because of his sporting attributes. With his wealth of experience, his knowledge and his clear identification with the club, Benni will continue to pass on the TSG DNA to the next generation of players and help develop our many talents." Hence why the club is already considering keeping Hübner at TSG once he has hung up his boots.

On 22 January, the 1.93m-tall centre-back made his return to the starting XI against Borussia Dortmund (3-2 defeat) after 574 days out. A persistent ankle injury had forced Hübner to take a break immediately before the start of the 2020/21 season.

"During this period, Benni never left any doubt about his desire to fight his way back into the team. We missed him enormously on the pitch, but even in these circumstances he was always an important point of contact for his team-mates and the coaching team. This was my express wish, and that's why I'm even more delighted to be able to factor him into my plans beyond the end of the season," said TSG head coach Sebastian Hoeness.

"In challenging times in particular, you realise the value of a partnership. The support I received from the club, the team and the fans during this period was overwhelming. This cannot be taken for granted in this sometimes hard-nosed football business and has always helped me through difficult moments during my rehab. For me, there was no question about extending my contract with TSG. I'm sure we can continue TSG's success story together," Hübner said.

The central defender, who boasts a strong aerial presence, came to the Kraichgau from FC Ingolstadt ahead of the 2016/17 season and established himself as one of the Bundesliga's most combative players. Hübner will make his 100th competitive appearance for TSG against Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday. Since joining Hoffenheim, he has played 89 Bundesliga games (six goals), five DFB-Pokal ties (one goal), three Champions League matches and twice in the Europa League games (one goal).
