TSG to play behind closed doors for time being

On Tuesday 21 December, chancellor Olaf Scholz and the prime ministers of Germany's federal states agreed on further restrictions to contain the corona pandemic. The Bundesliga is also affected by this.

In view of the dramatic increase in the number of corona infections, the federal and state governments have decided that major inter-regional sporting events will have to be held behind closed doors next year for the time being. The restrictions will come into force on 28 December. It has not yet been decided how long these regulations, which were decided at the federal-state summit, will apply.

TSG already played its home games in December in front of only 750 fans. The home games against FC Augsburg (8 January), SC Freiburg (19 January) and Borussia Dortmund (22 January) would be affected by these measures.

The German Football League (DFL) said the following of the decision: "It goes without saying that protecting public health and relieving the burden on healthcare systems are the top priority, all the more so in view of the current assessments made by the federal government and its experts on the possible spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. With this in mind, the temporary restrictions imposed by the federal and state governments on spectators at major events are regrettable but understandable even if we'd all hoped until recently that there would be no nationwide return to games played behind closed doors. The DFL is making a renewed and urgent appeal: get vaccinated or get your booster jab as soon as possible!"

Information on the draw for the home game against Augsburg will be provided after the final decision has been made by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The draw for season ticket holders will be online until Wednesday 23 December 2021 (18:00 CET). Information on the proportional refund of season tickets for the Bundesliga home matches against Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Augsburg will follow in the second calendar week of 2022. Season ticket holders were already informed in writing by email on 16 December about the refund process for the cancelled match against Eintracht Frankfurt.
