Baumann extends until 2024

Ahead of the big match in the Bundesliga this weekend - the Baden Derby against SC Freiburg on Saturday (15:30 CET) - TSG Hoffenheim and Oliver Baumann have agreed a contract extension to keep the goalkeeper at the club for an additional year until 30 June 2024. By then, the keeper, currently 31 years old, will have been at TSG for ten years.

"Oli is one of the strongest and most consistent goalkeepers in the league and a reliable leader in our team. However it is not just his sporting achievements, but also his personality, his impeccable character and his absolute identification with the club that make him one of the faces of TSG," says director of football Alexander Rosen. "Oli was, is and will remain an important cornerstone of our success. Being able to plan for the long term with him on board represents a vital step into the future for us."

Baumann, alongside players like Andrej Kramarić (top goalscorer) or Sebastian Rudy (most Bundesliga appearances), is one of TSG Hoffenheim's record-breakers in their fourteenth Bundesliga season. Over the past few years, the goalkeeper, who moved to Hoffenheim from their upcoming opponents SC Freiburg in the summer of 2014, has developed into a unique presence at the club. He is a marathon man and a top performer in the Bundesliga: he made more Bundesliga appearances than any other player in the league between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019. With 316 games played over the course of the decade, the TSG goalkeeper finished ahead of Thomas Müller (314, Bayern Munich) and Robert Lewandowski (307, Bayern/Dortmund) in a ranking published by specialist football magazine "kicker". 185 of these appearances came for TSG, while the other 131 were for SC Freiburg. In 2019, Baumann also played his 300th league game at 29 years and 77 days of age. Previously, only four goalkeepers had exceeded the 300-game mark at this age, namely German goalkeeping legends Eike Immel, Norbert Nigbur, Bodo Illgner and Toni Schumacher. "Oli has been delivering consistent performances at the highest level for several years now. The key to this is his positive ambition, his will to improve every day in training, his meticulous match preparation and a professional attitude," says coach Sebastian Hoeness about his keeper.

Baumann had the following to say about his decision: "The move to Hoffenheim quickly proved to be the right step for me. I feel a high level of appreciation here - both within the club and among the fans. At TSG I have access to fantastic opportunities and leading experts, all of which has helped me make huge developments. We have achieved a lot as a team in the past few years, qualified twice for the Europa League and even made it to the Champions League once, and I am sure that we all have an exciting future ahead of us here if we continue to work together like this."

Baumann has stood in goal for TSG Hoffenheim in 242 Bundesliga matches and ten DFB-Pokal matches. He's also made eight appearances in the Champions League, ten in the Europa League and has kept a total of 59 clean sheets during his time at the club.
