Baden-Derby: Battle of the point collectors

SC Freiburg and TSG Hoffenheim are about to go head-to-head in the Bundesliga for the 23rd time – and this season the Baden derby is a headline clash, with both teams occupying a European berth after 14 matches. tsg-hoffenheim.de has compiled the most important facts and figures on #SCFTSG below.

Did you know that…

…clashes between TSG and SC Freiburg tend to end without a winner?

Hoffenheim have played out more draws against Freiburg than any other club since they gained promotion to the Bundesliga in 2008: 10 of the previous 22 meetings between the Baden rivals have ended in stalemate, while there have been five wins for TSG and seven for SCF.

…Hoffenheim are racking up one win after another at the moment?

TSG are currently in outstanding form, having won three games on the bounce. It is their first such run since Sebastian Hoeness was appointed coach, with the last three-match winning streak coming back in June 2020. Hoffenheim's longest such run came in autumn 2019 (five wins).

…SC Freiburg are hunting records?

Freiburg have picked up 25 points in their first 14 games of this Bundesliga season – equal to the best-ever haul in the club's history (previously in 2019/20). Christian Streich's side have also conceded only 13 goals – fewer than any other BL team and their fewest-ever after 14 games.

…TSG have been amassing points too?

23 points from their first 14 Bundesliga fixtures – TSG have eight more points on the board than at the same stage of last season. TSG only previously had this many points after 14 BL games in 2016/17 under Julian Nagelsmann (26) and in 2008/09 under Ralf Rangnick (31).

…set-pieces are one of Freiburg's biggest strengths?

Coach Christian Streich's charges scored four goals from dead balls in their 6-0 demolition of Mönchengladbach last weekend. The previous team to score that many set-piece goals in a Bundesliga match was also Freiburg, who did so in a 4-3 win over Cologne in December 2017.

…Georginio Rutter is on the verge of a hat-trick?

The TSG forward has scored in the last two matches and could become the first Hoffenheim player this season to find the net at least once in three consecutive Bundesliga games.
